Stablecoins — The perfect bridge between traditional assets and cryptocurrencies?

Since its first iteration that took place all the way back in 2012, the annual Money20/20 conference has quickly transformed into one of the most prominent stages where industry leaders, tech pioneers, and visionaries from the world of banking, fintech come together to discuss ways through which money can change hands — be it borrowing, spending, managing — within this fast-evolving global finance landscape.

In this context, it is worth mentioning that stablecoins — which can be thought of as a unique class of assets that have their value hinged to local fiat assets — have gained an immense amount of mainstream market traction over the last couple of years, primarily because they serve as the perfect gateway for traditionalists to make their foray into the cryptocurrency market.

As part of the session, I will be taking a deep dive into the subject of stablecoins and decentralized finance (DeFi) with Alex Song, Head of Finance & Capital Markets for Ramp. The discussion will entail how these unique assets can serve as a perfect point of entry for anyone looking to enter the crypto industry without having to dive into unchartered territory completely. Furthermore, we will also look at the ever-evolving world of DeFi through the lens of a traditional financial institution, with Alex discussing his views regarding Ramp’s approach to deploying corporate treasury into traditional capital market asset classes and his company’s approach to alternative solutions regarding stablecoins.

For perspective, over the course of 2021, the stablecoin market has grown nearly fivefold — with the total cap of this space rising from around $20 billion to over $115 billion. Similarly, the DeFi market too has surged exponentially this year, with the total value locked (TVL) within this sector rising from $25 billion to over $100 billion over the last 10-odd months. Thus, attendees can expect an evening full of exciting conversations pertaining to these fast-evolving markets.
